CapWEM at the Coordination Event ALFA III in Montevideo

The European Commission (EC) organized an event in the frame of the ALFA III-Program from 11th to 13th June 2012 in Montevideo, Uruguay. Invited were coordinators and representatives of 51 running or recently finished ALFA III projects. Lisa Lugo and Jürgen Steinbrecher represented CapWEM.
The main objectives of the event were to exchange experiences and best practices among the projects and to discuss measures to improve sustainability and impact. Furthermore the EC presented new initiatives with regard to visibility and communication and other regional programs in order to identify possible synergies with the ALFA III projects.
There were a lot of opportunities for contacts with colleagues of other ALFA III projects. CapWEM contacted especially the projects RAP-GIRH, d-PoLiTaTe and SERIDAR. RAP-GIRH plans a Master Program for Integrated Water Resource Management in the Andean Region, d-Politate works on the topic Research Transfer and SERIDAR plans to implement a joint PhD-Program on the topic Rural Development.
CapWEM was selected to give a presentation in the workshop "Synergies with other regional cooperation programs". Jürgen Steinbrecher presented possible synergies between CapWEM and RALCEA.

Milestone Meeting in Asunción and Talca

The 2. milestone meeting was held from 10th to 19th March 2012 in Asunción and Talca. Apart from the exchange of interim results in the different work packages, the team carried out an excursion with a visit of Itaipú dam. Also two seminars were held in Paraguay and Chile. Some results of the meeting are published in the download area.

 

 

International seminar on Experiences in Water and Environmental Management at the University of Talca in Chile

Within the scope of the project meeting of CapWEM in Chile, the Chilean partner university will conduct an international seminar on regional experiences in water and environmental management. Experts from Chile, Paraguay, Portugal and Germany will report about projects and experiences in their countries. The major focus will be put on hydrological models in the region of Maule, trends in the topic of rainwater in Latin American countries as well as on water quality management in Paraguay and in Europe.

The seminar will take place in the auditorium of the Forestry Faculty of the University of Talca and will start at 9.00 a.m. A participation fee will not be levied.

International seminar on Transboundary Risk Management at the University of „Nuestra Señora de la Asunción“ in Paraguay

Within the scope of the project meeting of CapWEM in Paraguay, the Paraguayan partner university will conduct an international seminar on aspects of risk management in transboundary river basins on 13 March 2012. Experts from Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and Germany will deliver presentations on that occasion. The major focus will be put on international water resources management in the catchment area of the Pilcomayo, risk management in the border areas of the Paraguay River and - as an European example – transboundary river basin management along the Rhine. The seminar will also offer possibilities for discussions. Since the local CapWEM team plans a pilot study on transboundary risk management, the seminar aims at establishing contacts to thematically related projects and initiatives in order to expand cooperations in the regions.

PhD-Program “Water and Environment”

Talca, 27.01.2012

The most important objective of the ALFA project “CapWEM” is capacity building and improvement of higher education in the sector of water and environmental management. To achieve this, it is necessary to improve the doctoral education and to increase the number of scientists with a doctoral degree at the partner universities in Latin-America. One project group under the direction of the partner university in Talca shall initiate a common PhD program.
On 20th January 2012 the University of Talca conducted a workshop to discuss the content of such a PhD program. In addition to members of higher education institutes, representatives of local authorities and enterprises were invited to discuss the needs of the labor market.

Workshop "Communication in Environmental Education –Water Situation in Bahía Blanca and the Region"

On 10th November 2011 a seminar on the topic of “Communication in Environmental Education –Water Situation in Bahía Blanca and the Region“ took place at the Argentinean partner university “Universidad Tecnológica Nacional“ in Bahía Blanca. The seminar was held in the scope of the CapWEM work package “Strengthening Environmental Awareness“.

The goal of the seminar was to investigate to what extent improved communication structures between universities, authorities, media and persons concerned can contribute to an increased environmental awareness of water issues. As a result, the following proposals can be documented:

  • a greater involvement of journalists into water/environmental issues,
  • a more understandable language in publications issued by authorities,
  • a wider dissemination of findings of university research.
